SCROLL DOWN

As Singapore’s Academic Health System, National University Health System (NUHS) comprises four hospitals, three specialty centres, three health schools and seven polyclinics.

Our connection with National University of Singapore (NUS) brings together a university-wide ecosystem of expertise, talent, and infrastructure.

Clinical excellence and groundbreaking innovation are in our DNA. These fundamentals drive our commitment to tackle future healthcare challenges and improving outcomes for our patients.

As an Academic Health System, NUHS integrates patient care, education, and research. What makes us unique is the close synergy among our institutions to foster collaboration and innovation. With a robust research ecosystem and a diverse pool of expertise, our resources and capabilities empower us to drive meaningful advancements in healthcare and medicine.

Empowering the next generation of healthcare professionals to surpass us

Education is fundamental to NUHS in shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals. With three health schools – NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine), Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) and NUS Faculty of Dentistry (FoD) – our education and clinical training have resulted in research breakthroughs that not only enhance patient care but also generates new solutions to the health challenges we grapple with today.

NUHS’ commitment to research, innovative thinking and forward-looking approaches has led to a multitude of groundbreaking discoveries and advancements in healthcare.

ENDOMASTER

The future of healthcare means operating outside the box

Among our innovations is Endomaster, a robot-assisted operating system conceived in an unexpected setting – over a meal of chili crab. Co-invented by Prof Lawrence Ho from the National University Hospital (NUH), Endomaster enables the extraction of gastrointestinal tumours endoscopically, eliminating the need for surgical incisions. This innovation not only accelerates patient recovery but also significantly reduces the risk of post-operation infections.

IN-UTERO STEM CELL TRANSPLANT

Improving lives with a game-changing in-utero stem cell transplant

In a first-of-its-kind procedure in Asia, a Taiwanese baby girl who suffered from osteogeneis imperfecta (OI), or brittle-bone disease, underwent in-utero stem cell transplantation carried out by a team of experts at NUH. Years later, she was reportedly thriving as a healthy child, having not suffered fractures despite leading an active lifestyle.

The procedure involves harvesting healthy stem cells – either from the mother or a donor – and injecting them into the foetus. The hope is that these transplanted cells can replace or repair damaged cells or form other material for the rest of the body to use.

AI IN HEALTHCARE

Integrating AI and improving Singapore’s healthcare ecosystem

Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a significant role in NUHS’ efforts to address Singapore’s evolving healthcare needs. Leveraging AI capabilities enables predictive disease detection and optimisation of operational efficiencies on various fronts, including a range of mixed-reality applications utilising HoloLens and ENDEAVOUR AI.

“Healthcare is essential and the health of people is our charge. Hence, we always ask ourselves, how can we improve the system for the people we serve and all who come after us?”

- Prof Yeoh Khay Guan, Chief Executive, NUHS.

At NUHS, we are not merely adopting the future of healthcare; we are shaping tomorrow's health, today.
