As the condition of acute patients can fluctuate quickly, Staff Nurse Caleb Chang must always stay alert to respond swiftly and effectively.

For Staff Nurse Caleb Chang, excelling as a nurse in an acute care setting is anchored in one word: passion.

Passion for the job, passion for providing care, and a passion for making a positive difference in people's lives.

Coupled with clinical expertise, critical thinking skills, emotional resilience, and a positive attitude, these qualities embody what it takes to succeed in this challenging but rewarding profession.

Caleb, who works at Alexandra Hospital’s (AH) integrated general ward, elaborated, “Patients in acute settings may deteriorate at any moment, so nurses caring for them must be equipped with critical thinking skills. Most importantly, these nurses must have the passion to provide care for their patients.”

At the inpatient ward, Caleb provides immediate care to patients experiencing sudden or severe medical conditions. His responsibilities include assessing patients' conditions, administering medications, coordinating treatments, monitoring vital signs, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Acknowledging the demanding nature of acute care, Caleb emphasised that his role often requires him to think on his feet.

He explained, “It's a fast-paced environment where we often face high-stress situations, rapid patient turnover, complex medical conditions, and the need to make critical decisions quickly.

“So quick decision-making, effective communication, and compassionate care are essential. I also have to provide emotional support and assurance to patients and their family members who are going through tough times.”

Despite the challenges, Caleb – who entered the nursing profession about two years ago – credits the incredible support of the hospital’s senior staff and leadership team for helping nurses like himself get through tough times.

One key avenue through which AH supports its nurses is by providing them with training and development opportunities.

“The leadership at AH actively supports and provides opportunities for staff to undergo various skills training, pursue further studies such as advanced diplomas, and offers sponsorships. These initiatives enable us to expand our skillsets and advance our career development," said Caleb.

“Personally, I was sent to attend a wound care course, which significantly enhanced my knowledge and practical skills in wound management. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work with the NUHS@Home team, which gave me the experience in managing patients in the community as well.”

Caleb also highly recommends aspiring nurses to consider applying for NUHS nursing sponsorships.

He explained, “These sponsorships offer an excellent opportunity for those aspiring to enter the nursing profession, as NUHS provides a clear pathway for those interested in pursuing nursing as their career. Singapore’s nursing standards and care are renowned worldwide, and this programme provides individuals like myself with the chance to be part of it.”
