To help treat the sickest patients and better manage complex cases, Assistant Nurse Clinician Geeveetha Silvadora consistently upskills herself to deliver incredible care.
As a nurse in the surgical wards of the National University Hospital (NUH), Assistant Nurse Clinician (ANC) Geeveetha Silvadora plays a vital role in providing comprehensive care to patients recovering from surgery, particularly those with complex conditions requiring specialised attention.
Given the challenging nature of her role, Geeveetha acknowledges that it is important to consistently upskill herself, so that she can continue to provide high-quality care and ensure optimal patient outcomes in the surgical ward setting.
As such, Geeveetha is now proficient in a range of advanced techniques, such as post-operation wound care involving vacuum-assisted dressing, as well as management of post-operation invasive tubes, catheters, and lines for orthopaedic patients, among others.
“In a tertiary care environment like NUH, where research and education are integral in what we do, the adoption of new technologies is faster here. So, we would often be sent for courses to update and upskill ourselves with new ways of doing things,” said Geeveetha.
“The doctors and other nursing seniors are always willing to provide guidance and share their knowledge. I am thankful for my supportive nurse manager and colleagues whom I can go to for advice and help when I meet with any challenging situation.”
Geeveetha's initial interest in nursing arose during the SARS outbreak in the early 2000s, after being inspired by the dedication and courage exhibited by nurses during the pandemic.
Since becoming a nurse over 13 years ago, Geeveetha has experienced her fair share of challenges, which include caring for elderly patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through it all, Geeveetha has remained steadfast in her commitment to assisting patients on their journey to full recovery, even in the most challenging of times.
“Being on the frontlines and rendering care despite tough times gives meaning to my work,” Geeveetha mused. “Working in a tertiary hospital means that we see more complex cases, and I nurse some of the sickest patients. But it gives me a great sense of satisfaction to see these patients through the recovery process.”
Geeveetha also highlighted the diverse opportunities available for nurses in a tertiary care setting, emphasising the profession's dynamic nature and the importance of continuous learning for personal and professional growth.
She elaborated, “Nursing has no boundaries and provides so many opportunities for us to explore and find our passion from bedside care to research. It is an ever-evolving profession, that requires continuous learning and that is how you progress. If you are willing to rotate, you can learn more, even from the doctors, and over time, your scope will widen.
“There is a rich culture of education at NUH, and I want to be with a hospital that provides me with training opportunities and grow me professionally.”
